WHAT IS ABALONE

Abalone, or ‘perlemoen’ in Afrikaans, thrives in South Africa’s shallow coastal waters. The name ‘perlemoen’ comes from the Dutch term ‘Paarlemoer,’ meaning ‘mother of pearl,’ highlighting the shell’s shimmering interior.

Among the five species found in South Africa, Haliotis midae is the largest and most suitable for aquaculture farming.

This luxury seafood is cherished for its unique flavor, and is highly sought after in Asia for its medicinal, cultural, and traditional significance.

WHAT WE DO

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • Establish communication and co-operation amongst members of the Association
     
  • Assist regulatory bodies with industry compliance to laws, regulations and monitoring programs. 

  • Consult with regulatory bodies on changes in the regulatory framework.

  • Communicate international compliance requirements with the industry.

  • Serve as a platform for market discussions according to the conditions of The Competition Commission Exemption.

  • Represent the industry on various  forums, both public and private.

  • Assume membership of related associations.

  • To procure funds and to apply such funds for the furtherance of the stated objectives.
